Osteopath vs Chiropractor vs Massage — what's actually the difference?

Most people who reach my table couldn't define osteopathy the day before, and many thought it was "like a chiropractor". It isn't — and the difference matters for your body, your comfort and your wallet.

The three, side by side

A massage therapist works the soft tissue where it hurts. Great for relaxation and muscle relief — but the work usually stays where the pain is. In a spa massage, relaxation is the result. In my treatment room, it's the starting point.

A chiropractor focuses on the spine and joints, often using quick thrust adjustments — the famous crack. Brief and targeted; frightening for some.

An osteopath looks at your body as one connected system and searches for the cause of the problem, which is often not where you feel it. In my practice the treatment is always gentle: no cracking, no thrusts.

The system approach, in one example

You arrive with a stiff right shoulder. A massage would knead the shoulder. An osteopathic assessment might find an old ankle sprain changed how you walk; your pelvis compensated, your spine adapted, and your shoulder — the most obedient worker in the chain — took the extra load. Treat only the shoulder and the tension returns in two weeks. Rebalance the chain and the shoulder finally rests. I'm an engineer by first training: bodies fail the way structures do — at the strong point quietly overloaded by the weak one.

What osteopathy is not

In Canada, osteopathic manual practitioners are not medical doctors. I don't diagnose diseases, prescribe medication, or treat medical conditions — anyone who implies otherwise should worry you. I assess and treat structural imbalance: tension, restriction, compensation. If what I find needs a physician, I'll say so and refer you. Adults only.

So which do you need?

Pure relaxation? A relaxation massage. One stubborn knot after a long week? A corrective massage. Tension that keeps returning to the same place, posture slowly winning against you, or a body that feels "off" with no medical finding? That's osteopathy — start with an Osteopathic Treatment (from $60; assessment included in your first visit).
