Swedish Massage — the classic oil massage, done slowly

Swedish oil massage in Britannia, Ottawa

Swedish massage is the one most people picture when they think "massage": long, flowing strokes over warm oil across the big muscle groups of the back, shoulders, legs and arms. It's the foundation of European relaxation massage — a whole hour whose only job is to warm the body, quiet the mind and let the muscles let go.

The techniques

A Swedish session is built from five classic strokes, and I always start with warming before any deeper work: effleurage — long, gliding strokes that warm the tissue and settle the nervous system; petrissage — slow kneading and lifting that loosens tight muscle; friction — focused circular rubbing that works into a specific knot; tapotement — light, rhythmic percussion (optional, and only if you enjoy it); and vibration — a fine trembling to finish. We keep the pressure exactly where you like it, from feather-light to firm.

What to wear

Swedish massage is done with warm oil directly on the skin, so you undress to the level you're comfortable with — you're draped with a towel throughout and only the area being worked on is ever uncovered. For a first session, fitted underwear or swimwear bottoms are a good, easy choice.

When to skip or adapt it

Please tell me beforehand if any of these apply: a fever or infection; a contagious skin condition or open wounds; a blood clot, DVT or circulatory disorder; uncontrolled high blood pressure; a recent surgery, fracture or acute injury; or pregnancy. In those cases we adapt the session, work only where it's safe, or I'll ask you to check with your doctor first. Adults only — and if something would be better seen by a physician, I'll tell you plainly and help you get there.

What it does for you

Swedish massage eases everyday muscle tension, improves circulation, and shifts your nervous system out of "fight" and into "rest and digest" — which is why people so often sleep better the night after. You leave lighter, warmer and calmer. It's pure wellness work: the relaxation is the goal.

Prices and session lengths are shown in the booking calendar below.

Good to know: a Swedish massage is relaxation and wellness work. For a version most extended plans cover, choose the Osteopathic Treatment — the same ease, plus gentle work on the cause.

Kind words I've carried with me from my spa years

These kind words come from clients I looked after at my Ottawa-area spas over the years. The setting has changed — the same care, and the same hands, continue here at ALX Osteopathy.
